Artist Bio

Eric Peterson was born in 1959 in Vulcan Alberta and raised in a family that has farmed and ranched in southern Alberta for generations. From an early age, his aunt, herself an artist, encouraged his artistic experimentation and appreciation of the simple things in nature, making him a sharp observer of his surroundings.

At the age of 19 and for the next ten years Eric ventured out as a young traveler with camera in hand to explore: India, China, Turkey, Burma, Egypt, Nepal, Morocco, Thailand, Hong Kong, Bangladesh in addition to Italy, France, Holland and Spain, Russia, Poland, Germany, England, Norway and Mexico. He returned with countless photos, thousands of them showing stone carvings from Mexico to Marrakech.

Eric's vast experiences as a traveler in these exotic places continue to be reflected in his unique and eclectic style of Stone Carving, Stone Masonry, Metal Sculpture, Jewellery and Stained Glass. North Africa left an indelible mark on Eric's art as seen in his Egyptian block style carvings. The vibrant flashes of saffron red and hot yellow in his stained glass reflect the heat, music and fevered excitement of an Indian festival. For the past 20 years Eric has traveled the back hills of the prairies in search of "rusty stuff" tools, implements and machinery. He carefully disassembles these relics that have survived the passage of time and meticulously reincarnates them into fantastical creatures, that display motion and movement paying tribute to their original function.

Whether trekking in the Himalayans or the back hills of Saskatchewan, carving Carrara Marble or Alberta Limestone, Eric has a keen awareness of the rich history of the world around him. Eric lives in High River Alberta, a stones throw from the Kananaskis Mountains.
